Our therapy for a child with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) focuses on helping your child improve their ability to plan and produce clear speech. We use fun and engaging activities tailored to your child's needs, starting with simple sounds and gradually building up to more complex words and sentences. We incorporate a variety of cues, like visual aids, touch cues, and verbal prompts, to help your child understand and practice the correct movements for speaking. Our sessions are designed to be supportive and encouraging, with lots of repetition and practice to help your child become more confident and accurate in their speech. We'll also give you strategies and activities to practice at home, ensuring that your child continues to make progress between sessions.
Parents are integral to the therapy process for children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS). Here's how you are involved: Initial Assessment and Goal Setting: At the beginning, we collaborate to understand your child’s specific needs and set achievable goals. Your insights about your child's strengths, challenges, and communication needs are crucial. Observation and Participation: During therapy sessions, you are welcome to observe and sometimes participate. This helps you understand the techniques and strategies we use, so you can effectively support your child at home. Home Practice: We provide you with specific activities and exercises to practice with your child at home. Consistent practice is key to progress, and your involvement ensures that your child gets the necessary repetition and reinforcement outside of therapy sessions. Regular Updates and Feedback: We keep you informed about your child's progress through regular updates and discussions. We value your feedback and observations from home, which help us adjust and tailor our approach as needed. Training and Support: We offer training sessions for you to learn how to use cues, prompts, and reinforcement techniques effectively. We also provide resources and tools to help you feel confident in supporting your child’s speech practice. Problem Solving and Adjustments: If challenges arise, we work together to find solutions. Your insights help us understand what works best for your child and how to make adjustments to the therapy plan.
For children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), I have effectively used both low-tech and high-tech Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) methods to support their communication needs. Low-Tech AAC: This includes tools like picture boards, communication books, and gesture-based systems. These simple, easy-to-use tools help children express their needs, wants, and ideas when speech is challenging. For instance, a picture board with images representing common items and activities can allow a child to point to what they need or want. High-Tech AAC: This involves using electronic devices and apps, such as speech-generating devices (SGDs) and tablet-based communication apps. These tools can be customized with vocabulary specific to your child’s daily life and can help them build sentences and express more complex ideas. For example, a tablet with a communication app can provide a voice output option, enabling your child to select words or phrases that the device then speaks aloud. By integrating AAC into therapy, we ensure that your child has effective ways to communicate while working on developing their speech skills. This dual approach supports their overall communication and reduces frustration, enhancing their confidence and participation in daily activities.
