Therapy for CAS with your child will be fun and interactive! We'll focus on helping your child make the right movements with their mouth to speak clearly. I will have your child think of therapy like learning a new dance move for your mouth! By seeing how the mouth moves to make sounds (modeling), and using visuals (like pictures) as a guide, I'll help your child target the exact movements needed to make those tricky sounds nice and clear. This might involve using pictures, mirrors, and even toys to practice forming sounds and words. We'll also explore how sounds come together to make words. There will be lots of encouragement and positive reinforcement along the way to celebrate your child's progress!
You're essential for turning therapy techniques into fun, daily activities. We'll create a personalized practice plan together, using pictures or games that target specific sounds your child needs to master. Your consistent practice at home will be a game-changer for their progress! I need your insider information! Tell me everything you observe about your child's communication strengths and challenges at home. This helps me tailor therapy directly to their needs and ensures a smooth transition between therapy and everyday life. The more you share, the better we can target frustrations and celebrate breakthroughs! Lastly, We'll be in constant communication. Regular check-ins will allow you to ask questions and share your observations. This two-way street helps me adjust the therapy plan as needed and ensures we're working together to achieve your child's communication goals.
I've used low-tech AAC with children with CAS to empower them to communicate effectively in various ways. One strategy involves creating personalized communication boards. These boards feature pictures or symbols representing frequently used words, objects, and actions. I focus on the things your child needs most throughout the day, like food choices, favorite toys, or daily activities (bath time, playtime, etc.). We use simple, clear pictures or symbols that your child can easily understand. I then encourage your child to point to the picture on the board to communicate their needs and wants. This approach can be further tailored by creating communication strips - smaller versions of the board focusing on specific situations or activities. For example, a "snack time" strip with pictures of their favorite snacks or a "playtime" strip with pictures of toys. This allows for more focused communication during specific routines. By providing a clear and accessible way to communicate, picture boards and communication strips can reduce frustration, increase your child's confidence.
