In treating individuals with CAS, I first and foremost make sure there is available AAC, either low or high tech depending on the individual's need, to make sure that they can express their wants, needs, and to socialize which we also work on becoming more oral communicators. I work on the two skills simultaneously. While working on oral communication, I typically take a motor programming approach with the use of sensory feedback (auditory, visual, tactile) to help create new motor patterns. We will practice movement gestures for speech production, focusing on imitation and using sensory information. We will decrease sensory feedback as we achieve success. I make a point of following evidence based research to make sure what we are doing has backing.
I regularly use the parent coaching model in my therapy sessions. I see us as a team. I come in as an expert in the area of speech-language, and you are the expert in your child. Some things will work and some things won't, be we will work together to determine the course of your child's therapy. Sessions are typically done in the home, childcare, or in the community depending on our goals. I determine the frequency and duration of the session based on child/family needs, not on a cookie-cutter 1 session for 30min a week. We come up with a plan of action together. There certainly is 1:1 direct therapy that also occurs, but I can only be with your child for a certain amount of time. You are with your child the majority of the time and to really promote carryover and generalization, I truly believe that parents working strategies into daily activities and routines will make the most improvement. What those activities are will be determined by the child's interest and parent's schedule, but we will map motor learning strategies and dynamic sensory strategies to your everyday life.
If your child is not able to get their basic needs met, they can significantly benefit from the use of AAC. AAC can help your child express their wants and needs, exchange information, social closeness, and social etiquette. AAC does NOT hinder learning to speak orally, and in fact, research shows that it can help! We won't just focus on the use of AAC or the use of speech, we will work on these together, so that your child can socialize and be a child while we work on something that may be very difficult for him/her.
I use both low and high tech AAC dependent on the child and family's need. We can discuss these options and do a full AAC assessment to see what will make the most sense for your child.
