Arriving at expert clinical opinion (the current gold standard) involves multiple tasks that inform the clinician about how the child moves their articulators and integrates this movement with the brain’s representation of the sounds we use in our language. The critical piece is applying current scientific evidence to the interpretation of these tasks. I work full time in higher education and research and received my PhD from Columbia University. Being part of the Apraxia Kids network has allowed me to expand my knowledge of both the science and clinical practice, while pursuing the theoretical foundations of understanding children's speech development. I have taught pediatric speech sound disorders as a graduate course to over 1000 Master's students in my career. Helping families of children struggling with speech is my passion! There are a lot of blogs and gimmick-y therapy approaches. My tools are science and an in-depth knowledge base.
As a parent myself, I know how difficult it can be to rely on other people to help you with your child. I am open and honest and keep parents involved every step of the way. If I believe I can help a family, the first step is to schedule a phone consultation in which I go over your case history, provide some education about children's speech development in the context of what you are seeing with your own child, and then provide recommendations for next steps. At this time I only do expert evaluations and support the treating SLP with goals and intervention planning.
AAC is great tool to help children close the gap on their communication skills. Finding the right option that works for the child, family, and context is paramount.
