Therapy begins with a full evaluation. This includes assessing the child's non-speech oral motor movements, an oral structural exam, taking inventory of the their current speech sounds, a standardized articulation exam, and a standardized motor speech exam. Once the evaluation is completed, therapy will begin by meeting with the family and describing the nature of their child's diagnosis, what methods work, and what their expectation should be. Initially, therapy will be frequent (multiple times a week), and short in duration (20-30 minutes). Collaboration and carryover within the home will be an essential part of treatment. So as skills progress over time, and generalization is the focus, therapy will become less frequent with longer durations.
Parents play an essential role in their child’s treatment and progress in CAS therapy. Together, we develop functional and personal word targets for the child. Parents are encouraged to participate in therapy sessions by watching videos of current target practice, so they can educate themselves on their child’s diagnosis while also carrying over skills for generalization. This is a team approach!
Everyday, my client base uses both low tech and/or high tech AAC. Low tech includes common phrase visuals on a ring (e.g. give me ____, help me, I need bathroom, all done, more). High tech AAC devices include iPads with communication apps such as Speak for Yourself, TouchChat, Proloquo2Go.
