I am a PROMPT Certified Speech-Language Pathologist. Children can explore the sensory gym, toys and games in a structured way that lets me evaluate them through an System Analysis Observation (SAO) and determine where on the Motor Speech Hierarchy their priorities for treatment would fall. This could include jaw stability, lingual control (tongue), sequenced movements (such as phrases) or other areas. I incorporate movement into all my therapy sessions and believe that the child's motivation can have a huge outcome on progress.
If I'm providing treatment sessions in schools, I send home videos or write ups after each session to promote generalization. Parents are welcome to watch, ask questions and be an active participant in sessions that take place in the office. If parents choose to wait in our waiting room, we do a re-brief after each session about what was completed and what they can carryover at home.
Studies have consistently shown that AAC enhances both receptive and expressive language skills. It can help reduce frustration for children with CAS who are having a difficult time communicating their wants and needs. Programs such as PECS or more high-tech options such as TouchChat with WordPower, LAMP and Proloquo act as a tool for children with CAS to access the world around them.
