I believe in a therapy approach that emphasizes the FUN in Functional. It is important to me to get to know my clients on a personal level to understand their strengths, weaknesses, likes and dislikes. I have specific training in motor based speech therapy treatment approaches such as PROMPT and DTTC. In my sessions, my clients and I work hard to maximize our time to increase the frequency and accuracy of our speech targets. I also believe in a carryover approach that involved parents and caregivers to continue practice and education at home. I love to integrate developmentally appropriate activities into her therapy sessions including sensory experiences along with fine and gross motor experiences as well. I believes that creating a safe and trusting learning environment is key to fostering speech and language development.
Our sessions will start with a warm up of sorts, regulation if needed, before we begin our pre-practice. We will then go into our targets, and then incorporate them into our activities.
I believe in a collaborative approach to speech and language therapy. In my speech sessions, I develop and tailor personal at home programs to each child. This includes videos taken in our therapy sessions sent to the parents so that they are able to see what we are working on, and how we are doing it. This is also paired with a note in a notebook or binder reviewing our session and provides targets to continue to practice at home. I take 3-5 minutes after every session to explain our session, videos, and answer any questions. I also encourage setting up additional meetings if the parent needs more time to review a treatment plan or ask additional questions. I also encourage them to send me notes and videos throughout the week showing me what they are seeing and working on at home. Unfortunately, insurance providers are not always able to cover the frequency of sessions that is recommended for ample progress with CAS. If we can promote and maximize carryover at home, we can help to increase that frequency and see progress.
I have introduced AAC to a plethora of my clients with CAS. To me, AAC is important to ensure we are continuing to develop language even when our speech system may be delayed. It is important that communication is readily available and accessible to children to help decrease frustration and also help them learn to communicate with the world around them. AAC allows children this option, while we continue to work on speech production.
