When working with a child with CAS, my first priority is working on sound movements through the use of principles of motor learning. This means rather than working on sounds alone (such as K or T), we work on movements across syllables (such as boy). Many children are not aware of where their articulators (jaw, lips, tongue) are in space or how to move these articulators to produce words. One thing we do to help that during sessions is to have the child look at my face during production. We practice simultaneous production and eventually direct imitation. We try not to play games or use cards in order to not distract away from my face. I try to provide specific feedback to let the child know how they are doing (e.g., open your mouth, good job making your lips round).
Parents are welcome to join our sessions to see how and what their child is learning. The more involvement from parents, the better. Once a word is mastered and generalized, the parents are expected to practice these words at home.
AAC is amazing!!! It is such a wonderful addition used in order to assist children with CAS (and other speech disorders) in utilizing language and getting their words understood. From my experience the use of AAC has only helped children to gain confidence, imitate language, and begin to more effectively and independently communicate.
