Therapy focuses on child-driven activities that allow for high-repetition practice of targets. I incorporate multi-sensory cueing to determine what support the child best responds to in order to achieve correct movement and productions. In addition, I often include gross motor movement of the whole body for regulation and coordination. Throughout sessions, I provide feedback for the child and also education to the family regarding approaches used.
Parents are an integral part of the therapy process. In the early stages of therapy, parents help create functional targets to address in sessions based on what the child can achieve. Each session, I provide education and feedback regarding targets addressed. Parents are often included in sessions for observation and further explanation on techniques and modifications. Once a child has reached a level of motor learning, instructions are provided to implement that target in natural occurrences.
I have implemented both low-tech and high-tech AAC for my CAS clients or sCAS clients. Initially, I provide the family education on each type of AAC. We consider what the child may access best, trial multiple forms of AAC, consider cost and acquisition. During treatment sessions, AAC is still implemented and accessible during sessions to allow for functional communication while targeting motor speech tasks.
