When working with a child with CAS, I prefer to provide therapy in a natural environment as much as possible. I work with the child's needs to deliver appropriate methods of targeting sounds. I love to use favorite toys and people in my therapy, and provide the sensory inputs needs that the child is seeking out or avoiding. We work in any supports that the child would benefit from to make therapy fun, engaging, and progressive.
I encourage parents to participate in therapy as much as they are comfortable doing. I want them to be a part of the process, from establishing rapport and ensuring the child is comfortable, to assisting with choosing target sounds and/or words for the child. I always want the parents to participate in ideas for therapy, along with having them highly involved in generalizing any skills.
I used high tech AAC with the children that I see with CAS. I incorporate this option into their everyday routines, as well as during our therapy. I want to have the AAC device available at all times to allow the child to have the option and opportunity to use the AAC when they need to. I also use low tech AAC to assist with communication throughout their days via visual communication boards, activity specific language displays, and sign language and gestures.
