Maryville University provides evaluation of and intervention for Childhood Apraxia of Speech at NO COST. The goal of treatment for CAS is to improve a child's ability to effectively communicate with family, caregivers, and friends at home and at school. To achieve this, the SLP and parent(s) will collaboratively select target words that are 1) functional and meaningful to the child and 2) appropriate given the child's motor speech skills. Each session, these target words will be addressed dynamically (i.e., increasing and/or decreasing the amount of support and feedback provided to the child to facilitate success) and intensely (i.e., a high number of repetitions of each word) within the context of activities that facilitate the child's attention and motivation.
Parents are involved throughout the assessment and treatment process. Parent input is essential in selecting meaningful and functional target words. Parents are encouraged to participate in and/or observe treatment sessions. As appropriate, activities for home are provided.
AAC may include gestures, sign language, pictures, and /or speech generating devices. AAC can increase communication, facilitate language development, decrease frustration, and provide a foundation for speech development for individuals with Childhood Apraxia of Speech.
