I use DTTC programming using probe words. We will begin by determining sounds that the child can produce spontaneously and also sounds they can produce with cueing. From there a list of probe words and treated words will be created, based on the sounds the child is able to produce and words that are important to the child/family. We will work on the treated words during therapy sessions by beginning with simultaneous production and progressing to spontaneous production. The session will include a high number of word repetitions and non-therapy tasks (ex. play as reinforcement) will be kept to a minimum.
Therapy techniques are described and demonstrated to parents during in-person meetings and parents are welcome to attend speech therapy sessions. Since I am employed by a school system most parents choose not to attend sessions. Their children's successes are shared with them via email, text, and videos and word lists are sent home for continued practice. When I provide in-home services I have the parents sit in on all therapy sessions and use a combination of direct therapy and coaching so that continued practice at home when I am not there.
I use AAC devices, both low-tech and high-tech on a daily basis. Sixty percent of the children I serve in our autism rooms are on high-tech communication devices. Most often I use Natural Language Acquisition (NLA) using gestalts (whole word phrases learned as single units of meaning) to target language skills, due to the language learning style of these students. Most devices are set up for analytical language therapy and I use this language learning style for other students on my caseload with apraxia that do not have co-occurring autism.
