I want to make the evaluation and therapy process as efficient and uncomplicated as possible. Typically I like to provide a free phone consultation to talk to parents and caregivers about their specific concerns. If an evaluation is deemed necessary, we will schedule a time, either in person or online, that works best for both parties. During the evaluation, I will gather background information and interests about the child. The parents will be provided information about CAS, what it is, and my treatment approach which will be motor based, as CAS is a motor based speech disorder. I will meet the child where they are at and build a solid foundation for production of various syllable shapes, vowels, intonation, and sounds. Each therapy session will be packed with fun activities the child will enjoy while practicing their specific, functional words repeatedly. I will stress practicing production of "Power Words" that help a child advocate for themselves including their name, "stop", "no", "help", "go", etc. The repetition is key to promote motor learning and generalization.
Parents will be involved every step of the way during therapy as it is the parent or caregiver who knows the child the best and who will interact with the child the most! The parent will provide information to me about their child including their interests and words that are highly important to them. The parents will be provided feedback following each session about how the session went and any homework or specific words to work on before the next session.
I do not hesitate to introduce and implement AAC to young ones that can not yet communicate intelligibly. Typically the goal is to help the child speak more clearly, however I know that using AAC along the way while practicing their speech production skills can only help their speech and language development. I have used basic sign language, core boards, and high tech AAC including LAMP, Proloquo to Go, Touch Chat.
