Treatment sessions focus on functional and relevant words that are meaningful to the family/child for the biggest impact in their daily life. Verbal, tactile, kinesthetic, and PROMPT based techniques are used to guide the child to produce the words correctly. Simultaneous production, immediate feedback, and parent coaching are important tools to be used in therapy as well. Due to the nature of location for services, therapy is typically provided in 60 minute sessions (unless other arrangements are made) using a variety of treatment models depending on the child's age and ability level with the expectation that family members will continue to work on the words practiced in the session.
Parents are strongly encouraged to participate during therapy sessions to learn the best way to recreate the correct word productions outside of therapy. Other family members are also encouraged to help in the process. Homework is given each session to continue the successful productions discovered during therapy. If parents are unavailable, videotaping and conferencing could be used to help communicate with the family.
Alternative and Augmentative Communication is a vital part of communication learning for those who struggle with verbalizing. Depending on the child's current level, a variety of forms of communication are offered for immediate success. Forms of AAC I have used include: pictures, sign language, communication boards, tablets with communication apps for voice output, and speech generating dedicated devices.
