I am a pediatric speech language pathologist who has been practicing with the pediatric population for over 30 years; I have been working with children with apraxia for over 10 years. I incorporate play activities to keep children engaged and not even aware that they are working on speech sound productions. My goal is to make therapy FUNctional (emphasis on fun) as well as effective with as many productions as possible to encourage improvement in speech sound production. I use functional words that are important to the child as well as to the family, and I look at the whole child to determine effective therapeutic interventions that will keep the child engaged and motivated. I always incorporate the parents to educate how to carryover the therapy tasks for generalization to the home environment.
I engage my parents from the first evaluation and throughout the therapy sessions. I always have my parents give input on important words that would be the most helpful and meaningful for them and their child for the home environment. Parents are always educated on what was effective in the therapy session, and they will always be given home exercise programs for practice to carryover the successes from the therapy session to the home environment,
I have used AAC (signs, picture books, AAC devices) to help my children with CAS or suspected CAS to be able to communicate wants and needs as we address speech sounds in the therapy sessions. These children need to have a way they can communicate as they are learning to use their biological voice!
