When treating children with CAS, I use a multi-sensory approach that is individualized to each child. I utilize visual, verbal, and tactile cueing strategies to ensure the child can be successful and then work to gradually fade those cues as appropriate. I use PROMPT cues as well as visual hand cues to assist the child in visualizing the motor movements required by various articulators. I may also implement the use of Talk Tools to assist in shaping sounds. I have been very successful in using a hybrid approach incorporating both the Kaufman cards which work on increasing word complexity as well as choosing a small set of functional vocabulary to make the child more successful in communicating their needs in the home or school setting. I work to complete a minimum of 10-20 repetitions of targeted words in each session and also strongly encourage families to practice daily outside of the therapy setting.
I feel strongly that parents need to be involved in their child's therapy process and view therapy as a collaborative team approach. We will work together to ensure your child is making optimal progress by participating in daily practice. I encourage caregivers to sit in on our sessions so that I can actively explain how and why I'm performing each therapy task as well as teach them how to help their child be successful at home.
I have both recommended and implemented AAC devices in the therapy process for children with severe CAS. If a child is making minimal progress with my therapy techniques, I may suggest a trial of an AAC device to see if it would be an appropriate therapy tool to assist in increasing vocal output and getting needs met while continuing to work on speech goals.
