Using a child- and parent-centered approach, you can expect therapy to be highly individualized. Therapy will include highly motivating, play-based activities and strategies such as following the lead will be incorporated to keep therapy exciting and enticing for your child. Therapy will adhere to the principles of motor learning and Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cuing (DTTC) to promote motor learning, improve motor movement accuracy, and improve intelligibility. Therapy will include small sets of highly motivating, individualized targets developed with your child's needs as well as their current speech sound inventory in mind. With time and improvement in skill, you can expect the difficulty of targets to increase to further promote development of motor skill.
Parent involvement in therapy is critical to the generalization and acquisition of skill. As a caregiver, you can expect to be an active participant in the development of individualized goals and targets. You can expect to be given tools and strategies to implement at home as well as taking on a very important role as the core advocate for your child and their needs. You can expect to be given education and become an educator to other important people in your child's life.
I have used AAC with children to help support, build and develop language skills as well as support the ability for a child to express themselves when their message could not be understood verbally to a variety of communication partners. AAC is a tool that may be considered to support your child in expressing themselves, if deemed appropriate following a period of assessment.
