I evaluate the child to determine the speech sounds and syllable shapes that are already in their repertoire and also determine what level of cueing is needed to improve accuracy. I also evaluate other areas of speech/language development including language skills, social skills, and preverbal language skills to determine the child's strengths and areas of growth. From there, I create a set of words to start working on that are functional, meaningful to the child and family, frequently-used, and fit with the child's current skills. Therapy is structured but also play-based. It is a dance with the child, adding in and fading cues to help the child achieve accurate productions more and more independently. I frequently use PROMPT which is a method of tactile (touch) cueing to help children improve accuracy of speech movements. We work hard in therapy but have lots of fun!
I love when parents are actively involved in therapy sessions. Parents are encouraged to observe how I interact with their child and then try the methods themselves so that they feel comfortable following through with home programming when they leave the clinic. I work with parents to determine functional, relevant words to target. I also believe that home practice is vitally important to success so families often go home with ideas on what to work on with their child.
I find that AAC can be a wonderful supplement to a child's verbal speech. I have utilized core vocabulary books with children which are small books that are sent home that include names and pictures of family members or pets, preferred foods or toys, and other functional vocabulary that the child can use to communicate and practice. I have also used core vocabulary boards and some higher tech options such as an iPad app or a speech-generating device to help a child communicate their wants and needs effectively. AAC often significantly reduces a child's frustration and allows them to communicate with their family and friends!
