My therapy approach is patient and family centered drawing from total communication including use of verbal communication and use of technology to assist the patient in communicating effectively. I practice with evidence based techniques to ensure that the patient is receiving the highest quality of care to meet their needs when working with apraxia of speech. I ensure that therapy is a fun environment that the patient enjoys attending, and feel comfortable participating during treatment sessions.
I ask parents to participate during treatment sessions, and to assist with development of goals and targets for their child to ensure carry over and improved practice at home.
I have used both low tech (communication boards) and high tech (speech generating device systems) with a variety of programs to assist with total communication during treatment sessions. I try to model visual language throughout treatment sessions in coordination with verbal language so that the patient is comfortable attempting communication in both modalities.
