My therapy sessions typically vary depending on the child's age and level of severity. I will always speak with the family about what they value and what functional words are important to their child for their everyday lives. I then will carefully choose target words from this list. I will always pair these targets with a game for each session so the child feels motivated and ready to participate. I have the child produce as many repetitions of the target words as possible in order to improve the child's production of those words. I then provide feedback on how the child is doing. Lastly, I give families strategies that they can then use at home to assist the child with carrying these skills into their homes and community!
I encourage families to note the words or phrases that are very important to their child, their family and their community. From there, we work together on what words or phrases should be worked on during the sessions. I also train family members on how they can encourage speech production skills based on motor learning principles within their homes by teaching them the techniques I use in my sessions.
I have always encouraged the use of low and high tech AAC to assist children with their communication breakdowns. For children with CAS, I often encourage the use of an AAC device as early as possible so that it can be used as an additional tool for that child and their family. I understand that these children may get frustrated when communicating; so the use of AAC is really vital to those children when they are trying to express their wants and needs.
