I use a variety of treatment approaches tailored to the child's needs. I typically generate a small number of speech targets (5 - 10) that are functional and child specific, which I create with the help of caregivers (i.e., what you would like your child to be able to say, what is something that your child would like to say). My treatment is child centered and activities include those that are motivating to the child. The primary treatment framework I use is Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) which is an approach that allows for a change to cueing levels provided within sessions and targets. I am PROMPT trained and use tactile (touch) cues to the face often, when tolerable and welcomed by families. The main goal of my treatment is to get the selected target words to be accurate productions on the words.
Parent involvement and training are very important to me. I enjoy collaborating with the families I am working with during and after sessions to make sure what I am targeting is functional for their child and that they are able to view and understand the progress as I am. In apraxia treatment, multiple repetitions are always the goal, and if a child is near mastery of a target I will often provide that target as homework to the caregivers with direction on how to practice.
Initially I may use basic signs/gestures and picture cards with CORE vocabulary words to aid children with low vocal output to facilitate more functional communication and reduced frustration. I have successfully implemented Core Boards alongside speech targets with a variety of younger clients. I have also implemented a variety of high tech AAC systems, including LAMP Words for Life and Word Power with children with apraxia again as a means to provide a higher access of vocabulary while working on speech production targets.
