The majority of my patients come to me with very little verbal language. I initially focus on syllable pattern production, rather than specific phonemes. Functionality is key. Broadly, I will begin with simple syllable patterns containing bilabial and alveolar phonemes, focusing on a child's ability to express their basic wants/needs, and things that are important to them in their direct environment. High intensity and repetition are utilized based on motor learning principles. If speech sounds are substituted, but the child is able to convey their point to familiar partners, shaping techniques are used following mastery to encourage clear production. I utilize functional play activities and always incorporate motokinesthetic/tactile cueing to encourage accurate productions. I've found that allowing a child to get their whole body and mind involved in the process has improved outcomes over time.
