For a child with CAS, our therapy will focus on helping your child improve the coordination of their speech movements so they can speak more clearly and confidently. I use fun and interactive activities to facilitate practice of specific speech targets through repetition. I am trained in how to use various multi-sensory cues to guide your child's mouth movements to produce targets correctly. Sessions are tailored to your child's needs and gradually increase in complexity as they improve. My ultimate goal is to build your child's ability to speak clearly in everyday situations at home and school
Parents are a crucial component of the therapy process. Your involvement helps reinforce what your child is learning in therapy and provides a bridge from the therapy setting to real life communication scenarios. Parents are vital in the selection of targets that are meaningful and relevant to the child. They can also provide important information about how the child is progressing outside of therapy, such as in school and at home. Parents are always welcome to observe therapy sessions to observe the work their child is doing and learn more about specific CAS treatments.
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is an important strategy for many children with CAS. While children are working on developing speech, AAC can support a child's overall communication and participation in the classroom and at home. Low-tech strategies, such as pictures, or brag books can provide your child with a supportive strategy to label family, friends, favorite foods and activities. For other children, a high-tech AAC device, such as a tablet with voice output, may be considered. The goal with AAC is not to replace speech, but to augment and enhance the child's ability to communicate in the world through a variety of communication methods. The need for AAC may also change over a child's journey with CAS and will likely look different as the child progresses in their speaking skills.
