Therapy protocols for children with moderate to severe CAS will be driven by assessment results and evaluation of stimulability and response to cuing. Initially, I will work with families to develop a set of words to work on, with sounds and syllable shapes within the child's repertoire, or those that they are stimulable for. These words will be also be highly individualized, and selected for building functional communication skills. This set of words will be practiced in short sessions, with a high number of trials. Once these words have reached mastery criteria in a variety of contexts, they will be targeted for generalization with distributed practice along with additional sets of new words.
Parents will be given information about CAS, as well as on-line and in-person resources for them to further educate themselves on the disorder. Assessment results will be shared in detail, emphasizing the child's strengths and areas of need. Once progress has begun, parents will be asked to participate in maintenance and generalization activities.
I have used AAC my entire career. I have 16 years of experience with low, mid and high tech AAC. I am fluent in most AAC hardware, software and vocabulary systems. I have developed and given several parent trainings on AAC in various work settings. I incorporate AAC into the treatment plan for children with CAS, alongside work on verbal production.
