It's crucial that therapy with children be play based, no matter the diagnosis. Not only does the best learning come from motivating activities, but this is where we will see generalization happen as well. If an activity does not motivate the child personally, it's my job to figure out how to increase engagement for the most success. It's important that therapy targets functional activities, words, and phrases that occur naturally in the child's day. I am in constant communication with families to derive the most personalized treatment plan for increased success of the child in their typical environment. My goal is that the child always be excited for speech!
Both direct services and parent training/education are essential to the progress of a child with CAS. I encourage family to be present within speech sessions to observe cueing techniques, discuss targets and activities to promote generalization, and watch the success of their child. While I, as the speech therapist, provide intense treatment during therapy, you as the family are with the child for the remainder of the days. The more I can equip the family to help support the child, the more success we will have!
It is important to begin the discussion of AAC early in the therapy process. Especially for young children, it's important to implement an avenue for functional and effective communication. Not only is it empowering for a child to have autonomous communication with others, but AAC can support continued language growth while therapy targets speech production and overall intelligibility.
