For a child with CAS, therapy looks like repetitive practice of a few target words using fun, motivating activities. I will be encouraging the child look at my face and providing a variety of cues to help the child say our target words accurately. As we move along, I will provide fewer cues and incorporate our target words into a variety of activities. Our focus will not be on specific sounds but on sound sequences, and we will work on producing more complex sequences over time.
Parents are crucial in my therapy process, particularly when choosing which words I'm going to target in therapy. I will usually ask parents to provide a list of words their child says at home and a “wish list” of words they think their child wants to say. This helps me determine what sounds and syllable shapes the child is already using, what things are motivating to the child, and which sounds and syllable shapes I could reasonably target next. I love for parents to observe sessions and complete home practice when the child is ready. If the child has an AAC device, I also like to help the parents find ways to model vocabulary on the device at home.
When using AAC in therapy sessions, this will look like practicing saying our target words while I simultaneously model the words on the child’s device, communication board, etc. I may also choose to focus on modeling vocabulary on the device for one activity and then motor speech practice for another activity. The child will always have the device present and any form of communication will be accepted (gestures, body language, sign language). I have successfully implemented this model in the past and firmly believe that AAC and CAS treatment can exist together!
