Treatment sessions are designed to address each client’s unique communication strengths and challenges. For clients working specifically on motor speech production, sessions focus on a small set of motivating and functional vocabulary words. For example, one child might be excited to learn how to say their own name, while another might prefer learning the name of a favorite TV or movie character. Vocabulary words are selected based on the child’s existing motor speech sound patterns to build on their current skills. Concentrating on a limited set of words during each session allows for maximum practice and learning. To keep the sessions engaging and functional, I integrate vocabulary words into both child-led and clinician-led play activities. Additionally, treatment may address receptive language (understanding language), expressive language (using language), and/or AAC goals alongside motor speech objectives, depending on the child’s individual needs.
Parents play a crucial role in a child’s treatment team. Their involvement in the therapeutic process enhances both their own and their child’s comfort with incorporating motor speech tasks into daily routines beyond therapy sessions. Once a child achieves high independent accuracy with target words during sessions, I frequently encourage parents to practice these words at home to support the child’s ability to generalize their skills to various communication contexts.
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) tools are essential for supporting children with significant communication challenges. I incorporate AAC with most of my clients to foster the development of their verbal communication skills while providing them with an effective way to express their wants, needs, and ideas for concepts that may be too challenging to convey verbally. Everyone has moments when communication feels harder, regardless of their verbal abilities. For some children, this might mean learning basic sign language for their favorite foods or items. For others, it could involve conducting a comprehensive AAC evaluation to identify the high-tech speech-generating device that best meets their needs. My approach to AAC intervention is highly individualized and tailored to each child's unique communication requirements .
