Therapy at our clinic for a child with CAS begins with an evaluation to ensure we are choosing the most functional targets for treatment.
I will speak with you following the evaluation to discuss our findings and to develop targets for treatment. These targets will come from the evaluation findings as well as information you provide of your greatest concerns for your child and functional words and goals that are important for your child and family to be targeted.
Treatment sessions will be based on the needs of your child, but most often we prefer more frequent and shorter sessions each week compared to longer more spaced out sessions.
I am very interested in collaborating with you about the treatment your child is receiving. I believe children learn best when everyone on their team understands the common goals we are working towards and can help to carryover those skills throughout a variety of environments.
I will request input from the parents on functional vocabulary that is important for the child to learn and use in their daily life. I will provide an update following each session to discuss the child's therapy targets and progress for the day and any carryover activities to be conducted at home until the next session. Occasionally, you will be invited into the session to watch and participate in the sessions to better learn and understand your child's treatment targets.
I use AAC alongside principles of motor learning to help my clients with CAS who need more communication support while improving their motor planning skills. AAC allows the child to communicate the language inside them until they feel successful as verbal communicators.
