I provide in-home services that allow for a child to experience therapy within the comfort of their home. I promote functional integration of preferred play during treatment, such as, allowing the child to choose their favorite car or toy and use that during high frequency repetitions of the stimuli personalized to your child's needs. I encourage parents to remain in the session vicinity to observe and support their child's therapeutic journey, as well as, understand what carryover will look like in the home. I take time at the end of each session to review and demonstrate with parents what was done and WHY it was done. It's terrific that we complete therapy tasks but the why is our foundation for progress!
Your children look to you for support, confidence and trust. When you are involved and present, they also actively increase their own participation and trust in therapy. I strongly encourage parents to be present during my sessions to observe what's done, as well as, to participate in trials because I want YOU to be able to carryover tasks when I am not present. Your child will need more than just sessions with me, they need you everyday. I also provide handouts and verbal explanations regarding CAS and what this speech disorder is. I also enjoy when parents have questions or desire that reassurance that this is just a label which predetermines nothing about your child's abilities.
In situations with children who present with severe CAS, I advocate immediately that total communication be integrated in addition to specific therapy to address CAS. I bring software on my iPad (LAMP WFL and SNAP) to model to parents what high-tech looks like, as well as, discuss how gesturing/ pointing, signs, or physically engaging with objects are all forms of communication that we need to support and encourage for children with CAS (and all children really!). In some cases, I have pursued purchase of a dedicated device for a patient in which I felt they would strongly benefit from this for functional daily communication while continuing to progress their verbal speech in therapy. I also thoroughly enjoy working with a child's daycare/ educational setting to provide education regarding total communication and specifically, how it is beneficial for my client's needs.
