My treatment approach varies on age and speech/language skill level however with Childhood Apraxia of Speech it is always motor speech learning based and I always strive to make things fun and functional for the children I treat. I use pieces of different approaches depending on what works best with the child. The techniques I use most often are the Kaufman Speech Praxis Treatment approach and DTTC Approach (Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing). My therapy is primarily play based for younger children developing into a more structured task session for older children. I strive for repetition and successive trials of accurate production during my sessions to encourage motor learning of the targets. I attempt to implement shorter and more frequent sessions for CAS when possible as research supports this. My goal is getting children with CAS to communicate clearly, functionally and independently in sessions and at home. I want the children I treat to be confident in their speech skills.
