Following Dr. Strand's course, it will be DTTC. Hierarchy includes: non-speech awareness (if needed), simultaneous production, direct model, delayed model, spontaneous word/phrase in response to a question. All of this will be used given clinical judgment of when to whisper, mime and provide tactile cuing-all as needed. Practice conditions will also be considered as child gains vocabulary. Practice schedule: block vs. random, practice variability: constant vs. variable and practice distribution: massed vs. distributed.
Parents are involved by participating in therapy and doing carry over work at home. Work at home is tailored to fit each child and family member. All parental questions are answered during the session as I always check in with the parent regarding questions and concerns that might have occurred.
I initially have used AAC as an adjunct to verbal communication. I have used it as an assist for social communication and to help with basic needs. As the power of communication is learned and as the CAS decreases in severity, the child seems to drop the components of AAC and move towards speaking.
