I usually start with vowels and word shapes with a focus on building V, VC, CV, VCV, CVC syllable shapes. I use visuals to support mouth movements for vowels (or arm movements). I use visuals to show lip closure, etc. I find verbal cues (popper sound, snake sound, tongue tip sound, etc.) to be very helpful. I incorporate a mirror and lots of repetition with a toy or action to practice word shapes.
Parents are in the session whenever they can be. I have parents observe and then they ask the child to do something. I let them know when they are reaching too far and expecting too much. I'm able to coach parents on their approach when they are present. Parents learn the value of specific feedback, using a mirror and making activities fun and motivating.
I am LAMP certified and use a variety of low and high tech approaches. I have approximately 5 apps on my iPad to trial and support communication with clients including LAMP, Dynavox, Snap Scene, Touch Chat and Go Talk. I also use PECS and picture communication displays.
