The most important aspect for successful speech therapy is having a great rapport with my students, parents, and teachers. For my students, they need to trust me and know that I am here to assist them on their speech journey. In addition, students have to be excited to come and work with me several times a week. I feel that getting to know the students likes and dislikes is essential in planning their sessions. By incorporating something they love into the session will build that excitement to work on our targeted sounds. My parents and teachers also need to be a part of the therapy. I highly recommend that when they can to observe a session via in person or zoom. I feel the more parents and teachers are included they can help carryover the success made in therapy.
Parents are an integral part of the team. They are involved throughout the whole process by providing information for the case study, help developing Individualized Education Plan (IEP), observing sessions (zoom or in person), carrying over targeted words to home session.
Natural gestures, sign language, and/or various types of AAC devices are used for students that are minimally verbal. The use of AAC is important, so the student is able to communicate his/her wants and needs to others. AAC devices are used at the start of treatment and will continue until the student can successfully express himself/herself using their own voice. Parents, student and teacher are part of the process in determining what is the best fit not only for the student, but for everyone in the student's environment.
