In the beginning, I facilitate speech movement sequences to develop ‘core’ words (e.g. ‘help’, ‘all done’, ‘eat’) that help children attain functional verbal communication and reduce their frustration. I use verbal, visual, and tactile cues to elicit specific speech movements and coordination. I educate parents about CAS and coach them on techniques used in therapy for home carryover - providing continuity and reinforcement of skills. The use of AAC may be considered to give the child a way to communicate while working on verbal expression. I try to use activities/games that are naturally repetitive and keep children engaged. Increasing the level of sound sequence complexity will continue throughout the course of therapy to increase intelligibility.
Parents are involved in speech therapy.
I have provided both picture exchange and aided language stimulation boards for children with CAS as an alternative to speech so that they may continue to grow in their expressive language development and to give them a way to communicate early on in the treatment process while we work on attaining more intelligible speech.
