I believe a child's success in therapy is dependent upon their relationship with me and their trust in me during our sessions together. I also believe that success in therapy is highly dependent upon family participation and willingness to incorporate therapy techniques and suggestions into daily home life. I work hard to form a positive relationship with my clients, as well as their families, in order to get the best possible outcome. When working with a child with CAS, we focus on drill work targeting the motor movements of stimuli words chosen carefully for the individual child (based on the child's severity, vowel errors and sounds in the child's inventory). It is important to get the caregiver's involvement in the stimuli word set because I want them to be functional for that child as well. Despite the sessions being 'work', it is always my goal to keep my time with each child fun and exciting!
Parents are always invited to observe therapy sessions. I believe that parents play an integral part in their child’s success. Skills targeted during a therapy session must be practiced daily, in natural environments, for mastery to occur. When parents are an active part of the therapy process, therapy moves along much more quickly and overall success of treatment increases.
Several of my clients came to me already in possession of high tech AAC devices. These devices are always available to the child for an alternate means of communicating something that he/she cannot produce verbally at that time. I will prompt the child to use their device if I am struggling to understand. Additionally, I have introduced picture cards and/or core boards to children to help them communicate basic wants/needs as they develop speech.
