I offer all prospective clients a free consultation call so that we may together discuss their specific needs and determine whether I would be a good match as their SLP. Next, an evaluation would be scheduled. I often utilize PROMPT's evaluation tools (SAO & MSH) for clients with suspected apraxia of speech. With parent permission, I record video samples of connected speech for later review, analysis, and comparison following therapy. A thorough examination of the oral mechanism is also necessary to have an understanding of what structures are moving as expected and which are not functioning as we would anticipate.
My practice values parent/caregiver involvement. For birth - 3 clients, I expect parents to be actively involved in each session. For clients who are preschool-age, I ask parents to be nearby and available to check-in prior/during/following a session. With school-age clients who are more independent and have a better understanding of the speech therapy process, I typically share my session notes and ask parents to work on a skill or set of words daily for repeated practice.
I believe that both low- and high-tech AAC can be tremendously beneficial to children who struggle to communicate verbally. Research has demonstrated that appropriate instruction and use also facilitates language development in AAC users. I often teach children with CAOS how to use AAC to repair communication breakdowns so that conversation partners and the child are able to understand the intended message, thereby decreasing potential frustration.
