I use a motor based approach to therapy that incorporates principles of PROMPT and motor learning. Once a child has received a motor speech assessment, goals and motor phoneme links are chosen. Goals are determined and therapy begins. Each session is started with organizing gross motor movements to acclimate the child to the session and focus their attention. A motor phoneme warm up follows regulation, this is where massed practice occurs to warm up the system for the targets to be covered in that session. Following the massed practice activities are chosen that will allow for practice of the targeted words in a joint attention, turn taking activities. Words that are made up of targeted phonemes are used in activities to continue practice of targeted movements. PROMPTs are used as necessary throughout sessions. Session notes and ongoing observation/data collection is used to modify targets as needed.
Parents, family members and related professionals are encouraged to work together to form a team so that there is consistency in in treatment and generalization across contexts.
AAC devices are used as necessary for communication and as a bridge to verbal communication.
