My overall treatment approach is designed specifically to meet the needs of each individual. I start with establishing behavioral expectations using a variety of gross motor imitation tasks in which a child can experience success quickly. It also gives me a foundation to build on in which positive reinforcement can be provided. I move as quickly as possible to verbal communication tasks using a variety of cueing strategies- visual, verbal, tactile, PROMPTs, to build functional vocabulary and communication skills that can be used across environments. I work with my clients to build a sound repertoire and variety of word shapes while incorporating principals of motor learning through more randomized trials. As my clients increase their verbal skills, I monitor for potential co-morbid conditions to address as needed.
Parents are very involved in therapy, especially in the initial sessions. Parents receive ongoing opportunities to practice targeted skills within the therapy setting so that they can generalize skills with home practice. Parents provide information to help determine the most functional therapy targets in order to build skill set so their child can feel success across settings.
I have used low tech AAC to incorporate gestures like nodding and pointing to increase functional communication as verbal skills develop.
