CAS is a motor speech disorder which consists of difficulty planning and coordinating the necessary movements for speech. Therapy targets increasing movement patterns for speech using consistent, frequent and repeated practice trials for a specifically selected set of target words. This will help to facilitate movement patterns and ultimately improve speech intelligibility!
In order for intervention to be most effective, we ask families to help support the process! This can be achieved by practicing the target words reinforced in the sessions, using strategies and models that we will share and support. Understanding CAS is so important for parents to help support their children through the process.
When a child is facing significant challenges being understood, we have implemented the use of picture boards or communication devices to provide the child with a method to communicate and share their wants, needs, thoughts or questions. These tools are used to increase communication and reduce frustration while we continue to target speech movement and coordination to help improve speech output.
