Therapy for a child with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a highly individualized and thoughtful process designed to meet your child’s specific needs. In the initial stages, I begin by getting to know your child’s unique strengths and challenges through a comprehensive process. This includes formal assessments, clinical observations, and, most importantly, input from both you and your child. By thinking critically about the latest research and evidence, I design a customized treatment plan that blends the most effective therapy approaches into a unique, evidence-based strategy. The therapy is hands-on and multisensory, engaging your child through a variety of techniques that stimulate different senses to make learning more natural and enjoyable. This personalized approach ensures that therapy is not just effective but also supportive and encouraging, helping your child build confidence and communication skills in a way that’s tailored to their individual needs.
Parent and guardian involvement is crucial to the success of therapy for a child with Childhood Apraxia of Speech. Parent/guardian is involved in every aspect of the therapeutic process, from the very beginning. This includes regularly sharing your child’s progress with you, and keeping you informed about the strides they are making. I also provide guidance on how you can support and encourage your child’s progress at home with practical strategies tailored to your child’s needs. Your input is invaluable, and I welcome your suggestions for specific words or phrases that are meaningful to your child, which we can incorporate into practice sessions. Additionally, your consistent feedback on how your child is doing outside of therapy helps us adjust and fine-tune our approach to ensure the best outcomes. Together, we form a team dedicated to helping your child succeed.
I have utilized both high-tech and low-tech Augmentative and Alternative Communication tools to support and enhance communication for children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech, if that's what they would benefit most from. These tools are tailored to each child’s abilities and are used to empower them to communicate more effectively in their daily lives.
