My approach to intervention for a child with CAS involves input from and participation by the whole family. Communication needs must be considered in conjunction with a child’s interests, motivators and daily routines. I use a caregiver coaching model and also encourage siblings to come to sessions. Family members are their child’s most influential teachers and part of my role is to facilitate functional communication within those relationships.
Parent and caregiver involvement is a key factor in successful intervention. They are the experts on their child’s preferences, motivators, aversions and needs. Throughout therapy sessions, we discuss observations about the child’s speech/language skills and what is considered typical development. We brainstorm opportunities for practicing targets within their everyday interactions. Families leave our sessions with actionable steps they can implement immediately.
Pictures, first/then boards and gestures or signs are used in establishing functional communication beginning with the initial session. Our goal is to look closely at what the child is already doing/using to communicate and build skills from there. I have used low tech and high tech AAC devices in sessions, depending upon the child and family goals. We discuss AAC options as a means to reduce frustration and increase a child’s overall ability to functionally communicate. Referrals for high tech devices are made as needed.
