I use a total communication approach with the children that I treat. I feel it is important to tap into all modes of expressive communication (verbal/sign/low and high tech AT) to allow children to communicate with their family members, friends and teachers. I am known for designing highly individualized treatment plans. I rely heavily on results obtained from best practice formal assessment techniques, as well as consultation with individuals involved with my clients on the impact of their communicative strengths and weaknesses as part of my assessment. Facilitation of connections between home and school (if needed) are an integral part of my therapy approach. I also stay current with research and literature on childhood apraxia of speech and use new techniques and treatment methods in my therapy. I am Level 1 PROMPT trained.
Parents are involved by having direct contact with me during each therapy session. For young children, embedding practice of speech and language goals within the families daily routines is imperative. For older children in school, I provide treatment plans to foster seamless carryover of goals and objectives to maximize the effectiveness of the therapy. I feel that family members are important liason between private therapy and public school professionals to make sure that best practice techniques that are introduced during my therapy sessions are continued within the school setting. I also encourage (with permission) parents to reach out and connect with other families that I work or have worked with to share ideas, tips, stories and possibly make new friendships. I also stay relevant with various family support groups within the Hartford County area and encourage families to take part in these as a support resource.
I am knowledgeable in ASL and Signed English, skilled in programming various AAC devices (ex. Proloquo2Go, Touch Chat, Go Talk, etc.), and use Boardmaker and SymbolStix to design low-tech communication boards for families and schools.
