I take each child’s individual strengths, areas of need, interests, and family priorities into account, so my therapy may look quite different for each child I see. In general, my therapy involves a lot of parent education and coaching - I want families to feel capable of carrying over therapy strategies into the child’s day. Therapy for children with CAS can involve a lot of repetitive practice, meaning that we want the child to say their target words many times. This can be challenging to achieve with very young children, so I like to incorporate play and routines (such as snack, outside time, etc) into my sessions to keep the child’s motivation up.
I believe that parents are the experts on their child, so they are involved in all parts of my therapy process, from the initial evaluation to ongoing sessions. Generally, I prefer for parents to participate in sessions whenever they can. This involves showing parents strategies for modeling and prompting their children to imitate and use speech sounds and words, and coaching parents on their use of these strategies. I do a lot of parent education so that they understand the nature of CAS and their child’s specific strengths and areas of need, as well as their child’s therapy goals and how we are working to accomplish them.
With regard to low-tech AAC, I teach the child and family gestures and some basic ASL signs to help the child communicate basic wants and needs, such as “more,” “help” and “all done”. My knowledge of sign language doesn’t go very far past that, so for more advanced communication needs, I incorporate high-tech AAC. I typically connect families to a representative from a device company so that we can trial different devices and determine the best fit for the child. After that, I coach families on programming and modeling on the device in order to teach the child how to use it to communicate.
