I'm a speech-language pathologist with 14 years of experience in a variety of areas with pediatrics, including speech-sound disorders, apraxia of speech, and use of AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) systems. I love to make therapy fun and functional, and be sure that caregivers are involved throughout the process...this helps make therapy the most effective and ensures progress! I For me, this looks like identifying and working with a child where they are at (attention-wise, learning readiness-wise, and using their interests), using play throughout to keep them engaged, and having parents present for at least part of the session to learn strategies, techniques, and ways to increase carryover of skills in your everyday routines. Therapy should be fun, meaningful, and involve everyone in the child's life!
I ask parents to be involved for at least a chunk of each session, or a full session every few sessions provided; this would look like joining for the last 15 minutes to discuss and see therapy techniques used, specific cues given, identifying routines to use which incorporate practice throughout the day, etc. I generally do teletherapy sessions, and for our littler friends, that might mean your kiddo needs support for most of the session, but often, our activities are engaging enough so that even my littlest friends don't need too much redirection.
I have had lots of experience with AAC for kiddos with a variety of needs and diagnosis, and I personally note that children with CAS pick up using AAC very quickly and are so very capable of using AAC to help repair communication breakdowns! I believe that most with CAS would benefit from a high-tech AAC system with robust vocabulary, though I also have plenty of experience with low-tech devices also. I have completed evaluations for insurance in funding high-tech devices as well.
