Therapy for children with CAS focuses on highly motivating and functional target words. I work with parents to select target words that will be useful and functional for the child and are based on sounds within their current sound inventory. Therapy sessions focus on high repetitions of target words using Principle of Motor Learning within motivating, play-based activities. DTTC strategies are used for cuing productions. Therapy also focuses on working on natural prosody and intonation. Written home programming is provided for home carryover as well.
Parents are actively involved in therapy. Many parents attend sessions with their younger children. I provide written homework that the child can be successful with at home for home carry-over. Discussion with parents is incorporated into each session.
I have extensive training in AAC. I fully support the use of AAC to continue developing language skills and also help reduce frustration for children with CAS. AAC can be a great bridge while our children with CAS develop verbal skills. I have evaluated children for high-tech AAC systems as well as created low-tech boards to assist with communicating. I focus on core word vocabularies when developing AAC systems to give children a way to generate novel language.
