Treatment for a child with CAS or sCAS will be very individualized and family-centered while focusing on the whole child. Through assessments, interviews, and observations, we will determine the best treatment approach for your child. Treatment approaches often involve intensive speech therapy involving parents/caregivers. Intervention often includes multi-sensory, high-repetition practice with feedback. I am very comfortable with Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) and embedding treatment approaches into play and routines. Parents will be encouraged to participate in a home program to help continue progress. In addition to the speech skills, we will also target any receptive-expressive language delays that may be occurring with the CAS/sCAS. We will consider visuals to support communication or AAC early in the treatment plan in order to support functional communication, expressive language and reduce frustration.
Family-centered treatment is very important to me as an SLP. Families are involved in the setting goals, materials and target word selection, and home practice. Through coaching and consultation, families will be given strategies and education on how to support the child at home with speech and language skills (including AAC).
I am highly trained in the area of assessments, implementation, and coaching of AAC, including light and high tech options. I am a firm believer in treating the whole child when working with a child with CAS or suspected CAS (sCAS). In order to improve overall abilities to communicate with others and decrease frustration, early implementation of visuals to support communication or AAC is imperative.
