I begin with an assessment to determine your child’s current skill level and identify area for growth. I work with parents to identify a list of target words that would be functional and motivating for the child to be able to produce and begin by choosing about 5 to start with. Therapy is started with chunked blocks of practice on each of the rods chosen. I use quick motivating activities to keep my child engaged, and ones that might lend themselves to functional use of the target word we are addressing if possible. I provide varying levels of cueing while working on each target word to ensure most accurate productions are elicited to support the child’s success and eventual independence producing that word. I love to have parents observe and participate in the therapy session as able in order to facilitate increased confidence in carrying over home planning activities to work towards generalization of target words.
Parents are so important! I ask parents to choose their target words for goals throughout therapy. We then work together to plan which of those words would be best to target initially, and which ones to add into our treatment sessions as future goals. I like to train parents on the curing hierarchy so they know how to support their child’s practice at home so that he/she is most successful as possible. For this reason, I prefer to have parents in the session, as long as it is not distracting for the child. Otherwise, I do have them observe from outside the room as able.
I have used picture boards as well as high tech devices to model target words within our session, as well as to model how to build longer phrases with target words that are being practiced. I also simply model functional language within an activity or game we are engaged with in order to facilitate their increased understanding and knowledge of their device for learning new vocabulary.
