As a former collegiate athlete I have always been fascinated by motor movements. When I found the Apraxia Kids Bootcamp I was thrilled to find a way in which my passion for motor movements could coordinate with my career choice. My approach has a balance of understanding when to push, when to support, when to bring in scaffolding and when to decrease it, all while providing a safe and trusting environment for us to work on these vulnerable skills. I am dynamic in my approach trying to keep in mind all children have different needs that may vary week to week or appointment to appointment. I love watching a child's face light up as they work towards and meet their goals. The bond that is created is truly special!
Parental involvement is encouraged! Before a session begins it is always helpful to check in on how the child did from their last visit to now on their assigned homework and any challenges or successes they may have had. I have found it helpful to structure the treatment sessions with the child and therapist together and provide feedback and tips to the parent after the session is complete. I then assign specific homework and give different tips for how to help elicit these productions. Parents are the core to the success of skill carryover! I am also available via email in between sessions to help with any concerns or questions that might arise.
Although I haven't had many come to me with AAC devices I am happy to try to incorporate them if the child finds it helpful. One child in particular comes to mind who I would use the AAC device for when he was reaching a level of frustration that was not productive in an attempt to express a desire in session. So as a means of reducing frustration in specific moments I have had success with AAC devices (high or low tech).
