My treatment approach is based on the principles of motor learning and is highly individualized to meet the child’s needs. Based on the child’s goals and current level of functioning, I will use a combination of the following techniques: 1) Multi-sensory cueing (including auditory, visual, and tactile-kinesthetic cues), 2) Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC), 3) Rapid Syllable Transition Treatment (ReST), 4) Kaufman Method, 5) Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), and 6) sign language. With the above techniques, I first help the child establish a core vocabulary of functional words to help reduce frustration and learn the benefits of effective communication. Therapy is always fun and enjoyable for the kids I treat. I incorporate a lot of silly sounds and vocal play in the beginning and increase frequency and intensity of my treatment when I see the child is comfortable and ready for more. From there, I will increase the complexity of the words used and how to incorporate them into functional communication and language development.
Parents are an essential component to my treatment. Although I am the “expert” in speech and language development, the parent is the “expert” on their child. Parents spend more time with their children, and research shows that they are the primary agent of change when given the support and education they need. Parents and caregivers are always present during my therapy sessions and are involved in creating functional word targets for their kids. Together, we brainstorm and create a home program that is both fun and effective in building language and speech target accuracy.
I incorporate sign language and pictures from day 1 to help reduce frustration and teach kids how powerful effective communication can be. I will work with parents to first create low tech communication boards individualized to what the child is motivated by and where there is the most communication breakdown. I also incorporate contingent response training for parents to teach them all the nonverbal ways their children are trying to communicate. I use Proloquo and TouchChat as high tech options when low tech is not enough.
