I use a play-based therapy approach that focuses on targeting words that are functional and important to my clients and their families. I incorporate target words into activities that are motivating for my clients and incorporate their sensory preferences. I am trained in PROMPT and DTTC and include a variety of these strategies into sessions to meet my client's needs.
I believe parents are their child's best therapist. I typically see my clients only 60 minutes per week so parents are a crucial part of the therapy process. I incorporate parents into sessions and teach them strategies that they can carry-over at home.
I use a variety of AAC with my clients, such as sign language, pictures, core boards and AAC applications and dedicated devices. AAC is beneficial for increasing functional communication skills and decreasing frustration while we clients work on increasing their speech production skills. AAC can also be helpful in repairing communication breakdowns due to low intelligibility.
